私自身の制作場所でもである吹きガラス工房を撮影しました。

カメラという道具を使って時間を写し取る「写真」。直接触ることのできない熱いガラスの塊を扱う「吹きガラス」。
私にとってこの2つはとても良く似ているもので、そんな思いを「熱と空気」にまとめました。
吹きガラス作家が普段どのような場所でどのような道具を使って作品を作りあげていくのか、制作風景を通してものづくりに興味を持っていただけると嬉しいです。

1300度の炉の中でガラスが溶ける。
オレンジ色の生き物のように存在感を放つガラスを竿の先に巻き取り冷めないように一定の温度をキープしつつ、炉の中で思い描く形にしてゆく。
熱しすぎると形が崩れ、温度が低くなると割れてしまう。
「吹きガラス」と「写真」はとてもよく似ていると私は思う。
形の定まらない熱いガラスの塊をいろんな道具を用いて形にしてゆく吹きガラス。
曖昧だけれど確かに存在する空気や時間や感情というようなものをカメラという道具を使って目に見えるものとして固着させる写真。
直接手で触れることができなくて、なかなか思いどおりにはならないけれど、思うような形を作ることができたり、
どこにでもありそうでかけがえのない瞬間を写しとることができたときの喜びも、とてもよく似ている。

The glass melts in the 1300℃ furnace.
I gather the glass which has a significant presence like an orange creature onto the end of the blowpipe, keeping the temperature constant not to lose its heat, I work it into the desired shape in the furnace.
If it gets too hot it loses its shape, if it gets too cold it cracks.
“Glassblowing” and ”Photography” seem very similar to me.
Glassblowing, the art of shaping the shapeless blob of hot glass using various tools.
Photography, the art of capturing the vague yet surely existing elements like atmosphere, time, emotion into a visible image using a tool called camera.
Although it cannot be touched directly by hand, although it is not easy to make it the way I wish, the joy of making the shape I wished and the joy of capturing the ordinary yet precious moment seem very similar as well.
